Pastor Mike Torres challenges us concerning the type of king we desire.

 

Summary

Although God promised to give Israel a king on His timetable and of a manner consitent with His rule, the Israelites decided that they liked other nations and wanted to be like them and requested a king like they had.  We often look for other kings other than King Jesus.

  1. Looking up “King” in Noah Webster’s dictionary.
    1. One who holds a supreme position or rank.
    2. A sovereign one invested with supreme authority.
    3. A monarch or prince.
  2. In 1 Samuel 8, Israel started to desire a King like the other nations had.
    1. God had promised Israel a king, but the timing was not right.
    2. They wanted their King rather than God’s King.
    3. Samuel felt they were rejecting him, but God told him that they were rejecting God.
    4. Samuel is told to make clear what “their king” will do.
    5. He will take much from them for himself and his servants.
    6. The king will bring his own problems with him.
    7. The king will take but not give.
    8. When you cry out because “their king,” God will not hear.
    9. This is the king they chose.
    10. The people refused to obey God, so he gave them a wicked king.
  3. God never intended for Israel to be ruled by a tyrant.
    1. God wanted to make Israel special, but they wanted to be just like everyone else.
    2. The Bible is a timeless book, we see a similar propensity today.
    3. Many are faced with the same dilemma, requesting a king after our own desire.
    4. We are often seduced by “idols.”
    5. Today’s idols are very subtle, and some have come under their lordship.
      1. Kings of political parties.
      2. The King of money.
      3. The King of Power.
      4. The King of Pleasure.
      5. The King of Political Correctness.
    6. All kings beside King Jesus are fallacies – Jesus is King over all.
  4. God has appointed the Lord Jesus Christ to be our King.
    1. God is the King of Providence – He will take care of all things.
    2. God is the King of Promise – Everything He promises He brings to pass.
    3. God is the King of a Plan – He has a plan which is being worked out in our lives and in the world.
  5. We need Jesus to be the King of our lives.
