There is no shortage of darkness in the world, manifesting in poverty, injustice, and personal loss. When hope fades, so does joy and peace, leaving us feeling trapped in despair. Yet, the gospel offers a powerful message: God has sent light into our broken world. Jesus, the light of the world, calls us to be that light, not just as individuals but as a community filled with hope. There is no shortage of darkness in the world.

It shows up in poverty, sickness, injustice, violence, addiction, trafficking, broken homes, homelessness, and the quiet pain people carry in private. It also shows up in personal loss, strained relationships, financial pressure, grief, and the crushing feeling that things may never get better.

When darkness is all you can see, hope starts to disappear. And when hope disappears, joy goes with it. Peace goes with it. Life starts shrinking.

But the gospel does not begin with despair. It begins with the announcement that God has sent light into the world, and darkness does not get the final word.

God’s answer to darkness is light

Scripture presents Jesus as the light of the world. That matters because God is not indifferent to the broken places of the earth. He intends to push back darkness, not merely comment on it.

Then Jesus says something even more startling in Matthew 5. He tells his people, together, that they are the light of the world. Not just individuals trying to survive, but a people shaped by Christ, filled with his life, and sent into the world as a visible source of hope.
