The Lord is My Shepherd: Finding Strength in His Guidance

Life can be overwhelming, especially when we feel lost and unsure of our path. In times like these, the words of Psalm 23 resonate deeply, reminding us of the comforting presence of our Shepherd. Today, we’ll explore the profound insights from this beloved passage and how we can apply its teachings to our lives.

Understanding Our Call to Action

In 1984, I had a transformative experience that compelled me to stand up for the rights of The Unborn. It was a calling that I could not ignore. While living in a low-income apartment in South Austin, I felt God’s presence urging me to take action. For three days, I lay prostrate on my bed, crying out for guidance. This led me to become the director of the pro-life movement in Texas, where I built a coalition of Catholics and Evangelicals, marking a significant moment in my life.

It’s essential to recognize that prayer is vital, but we must also put our faith into action. I had the opportunity to sit on a panel with the Governor of Texas, where I advocated for the establishment of a liaison between the religious community and the government. This was a pivotal moment that granted us a voice at the Capitol, allowing us to influence legislation that could impact the moral fabric of our state.

The Importance of Wise Counsel

Throughout the Bible, we see the significance of seeking wise counsel. In the King James Version, there are 139 references to counsel, highlighting its importance in making sound decisions. A lack of consensus often leads to division, as evidenced by the story of Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, who ignored the wise advice of his father’s advisors and listened to the inexperienced counsel of his peers. This decision resulted in the division of Israel, a stark reminder of the consequences of disregarding wisdom.

Today, we face similar challenges in our society. Division is rampant, from local communities to the highest levels of government. We must strive for righteous and moral leadership, seeking counsel from those with experience and wisdom to guide us.

The Impact of Personal Stories

One of the most compelling stories I encountered was that of Dr. Bernard Nathanson, who oversaw 60,000 abortions before experiencing a profound change in his beliefs. His documentary, “Silent Scream,” revealed the reality of abortion and the impact it has on the unborn. Despite his initial callousness, he eventually recognized the sanctity of life, showing us that transformation is possible for everyone.

Addressing the Pain of Abortion

It’s crucial to address the pain associated with abortion. Many women have been deceived, thinking it was a simple choice, only to later realize the emotional and spiritual toll it takes. If you’ve experienced this, know that God’s grace covers all sins. We must advocate for the unborn and support those who have been affected by abortion, helping them find healing and hope.

The Significance of Psalm 23

Let’s delve into Psalm 23, which beautifully illustrates the relationship between God and His people. This psalm is a journey of faith, depicting God as our Shepherd who leads us through life’s valleys and challenges. It’s a reminder that we are not alone; He is with us every step of the way.

He Leads Me to Still Waters

In Psalm 23:2, we read, “He leads me beside still waters.” This imagery speaks to our need for peace and nourishment. Just as sheep will seek clean water to drink, we must seek spiritual sustenance from God. When we turn to Him, our thirst for fulfillment is quenched. As Jesus said in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.”

The Dangers of Stagnation

Sheep can easily fall into polluted waters, leading to illness and despair. Similarly, when we stray from God’s path, we risk becoming spiritually stagnant. We must remain vigilant, seeking God’s living water to cleanse and restore us. In Jeremiah 2:13, God laments, “My people have committed two sins: they have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” Let us not forsake the source of true life!

The Journey of Restoration

Restoration is a vital theme in our spiritual journey. In Psalm 23:3, we read, “He restores my soul.” Just as a shepherd cares for his sheep, God desires to restore us when we feel lost or broken. Every one of us has moments of weakness and despair, but God’s mercy allows us to rise again. When we stumble, we must remember to get back up, repent, and continue moving forward in faith.

The Value of Accountability

We all need accountability in our lives. Just as a shepherd watches over his flock, we must surround ourselves with wise counsel and support. When we stray, those who care for us can help guide us back to safety. It’s essential to remain connected to our community and seek help when needed.

Walking Through the Valley

Psalm 23:4 states, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me.” This verse reminds us that even in our darkest moments, God is present. The valleys we face are not meant to destroy us but to draw us closer to Him. In times of trouble, we must cling to God, knowing He is our comfort and strength.

The Comfort of His Presence

God’s rod and staff provide comfort and guidance. The rod symbolizes His authority and protection, while the staff represents His support and care. As we navigate life’s challenges, we can lean on God, trusting that He will guide us through the storms. In Matthew 28:20, Jesus promises, “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” This assurance is our anchor in difficult times.

Preparing a Table in the Presence of Our Enemies

In Psalm 23:5, we read, “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” This imagery reflects God’s provision and blessing, even amidst adversity. When we remain faithful, God honors us and provides for our needs. It’s a reminder that our struggles do not define us; instead, they are opportunities for growth and testimony.

Conclusion: The Goodness and Mercy of God

Finally, Psalm 23:6 concludes with a powerful declaration: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.” We are reminded that God’s goodness and mercy are ever-present, guiding us on our journey. As we learn to trust in Him, we will experience the fullness of life He promises.

As we reflect on the teachings of Psalm 23, let us commit to seeking God as our Shepherd, trusting in His guidance, and sharing His love with others. May we strive to be a voice for the voiceless and stand up for righteousness in our communities, knowing that we are not alone in this journey.

Authentic Relational Church — The Jerusalem Model

Christianity can appear successful by worldly standards—big buildings and large attendance—yet still miss the transforming power Jesus intended. When the church is organized by systems instead of organic, family-shaped relationships, it often fails to reflect heaven on earth. The heart of the problem is structural. A mechanistic church produces mechanical results, while a church rooted in belonging and the gospel brings life, healing, and renewal. The dream is simple: every person experiences love, welcome, and a personal encounter with Jesus. Discover how the early church’s model can inspire a thriving, relational community today.
