Holding Rank: A Tribute to Veterans and a Call to Service

Photo by Duy Pham on Unsplash

Today, we gather to honor our veterans and reflect on the importance of holding rank, not just in the military, but in every aspect of our lives. Veterans Day serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served our nation. It is a day to express gratitude and acknowledge the dedication of our brave men and women in uniform.

Honoring Our Veterans

As we celebrate this day, let us take a moment to appreciate the veterans among us. If you are a veteran, please stand. Your service has been invaluable, and we thank you for your courage and commitment. We also recognize first responders who stand ready to serve our communities every day.

Growing up as an army brat, I learned the value of discipline and sacrifice from my father, who served in the military for thirty years. His stories of bravery and honor shape my understanding of service. This Veterans Day, I wear my father’s retired uniform and display his flag as a tribute to his legacy and the sacrifices he made for our freedom.

In honoring our veterans, we also acknowledge their families who support them through thick and thin. The sacrifices of military families are often overlooked, yet they play a crucial role in the lives of those who serve.

The Meaning of the Flag

In a moment, we will watch a video that illustrates the significance of the American flag and the profound meaning behind its folding ceremony. This flag represents the honor, bravery, and sacrifice of all who have served. Unfortunately, we encountered some technical difficulties, but the essence of what the flag symbolizes remains unchanged.

My friend Said, a former soldier and intelligence officer, has a remarkable story of survival that speaks to the resilience of the human spirit. He escaped Cambodia during a horrific time in history and now shares his story through a book he authored. His journey from darkness to freedom is a testament to the power of faith and the importance of compassion.

Understanding Sacrifice

As we reflect on sacrifice, it’s essential to recognize that many veterans return home with invisible wounds. I, too, faced my own battles with PTSD after serving in combat. I remember moments of darkness, but I also remember the incredible support from my wife, Donna, who stood by me through those tough times.

When we think of war, we often picture the physical battles, but there are emotional and psychological battles that continue long after the fighting stops. It’s vital to acknowledge these struggles and provide support for those who bear the weight of their experiences.

The 21-Gun Salute

Many of you are familiar with the 21-gun salute, a military honor that dates back to the Civil War. It signifies respect and remembrance for those who have served. Each volley fired represents a commitment to duty, honor, and integrity. When we hear this salute, we are reminded of the sacrifices made for our freedom.

In essence, holding rank means fulfilling our responsibilities with integrity, whether as soldiers, parents, or community members. It’s about understanding that we are all interconnected and that our actions impact one another.

A Call to Hold Rank

Today, I want to encourage each of you to hold rank in your lives. As fathers, mothers, and citizens, we must take our roles seriously. We live in a great nation, and it’s our privilege to exercise our rights and responsibilities. Let’s not take these freedoms for granted.

Throughout the years, I have sponsored immigrants and refugees, helping them acclimate to our culture and society. This experience has been rewarding, and I believe that many of our societal issues can be resolved through compassion and service. When we hold rank, we serve not just ourselves but also those around us.

The Importance of Community

Our community is strengthened when we come together to support one another. I recall sponsoring an MS-13 gang member who turned his life around through faith. By extending compassion and love, we can help transform lives. It’s essential to remember that everyone deserves a second chance, and we can be the catalyst for change.

When we discuss immigration, it’s crucial to recognize that many individuals seek refuge and a better life. As a nation built on compassion, we must extend our hands and hearts to those in need. The church has a significant role in this, and I believe we can make a difference by sponsoring families and helping them integrate into our communities.

Lessons from the Sons of Issachar

Let’s turn our attention to the biblical account of the sons of Issachar, who understood the times they lived in and how to respond. In 1 Chronicles 12:32, we learn about their wisdom and insight. They were not just warriors; they were leaders who recognized the importance of holding rank and fulfilling their duties.

The church today must also strive to understand the times we are in. We need to address pressing issues, such as poverty, hunger, and immigration, with a compassionate heart. It’s not enough to simply identify problems; we must seek solutions and take action.

Keeping Rank in Our Lives

As we continue to navigate our lives, let’s commit to keeping rank in every area. Whether at work, home, or within our communities, our actions matter. We are called to be examples of Christ’s love and compassion. When we hold rank, we create a ripple effect that can transform lives.

In my experience, the most powerful truths are often the simplest: duty, honor, and courage. These principles guide us as we navigate our roles in life. When we fulfill our responsibilities, we honor those who have come before us and pave the way for future generations.

Final Thoughts

As we conclude our time together, I want to express my gratitude for each of you holding rank in your lives. Your commitment to service, honor, and courage does not go unnoticed. Remember, we are all part of a larger mission, and together we can make a difference.

Let us pray and give thanks for our veterans, our communities, and the opportunities we have to serve one another. May we continue to hold rank and fulfill our duties with integrity and love.

Why You Feel Alone in a Crowded Church

One of the great tragedies of modern Christianity is that many people can sit in a room full of believers and still feel profoundly alone. Authentic Relational Church — The Jerusalem Model

Christianity can appear successful by worldly standards—big buildings and large attendance—yet still miss the transforming power Jesus intended. When the church is organized by systems instead of organic, family-shaped relationships, it often fails to reflect heaven on earth. The heart of the problem is structural. A mechanistic church produces mechanical results, while a church rooted in belonging and the gospel brings life, healing, and renewal. The dream is simple: every person experiences love, welcome, and a personal encounter with Jesus. Discover how the early church’s model can inspire a thriving, relational community today.

Authentic Relational Church: Rebuilding Genuine Christian Community

The heart of Christianity is not an either/or between a private relationship with Jesus and a gathered church. The church exists as the visible, covenantal expression of Christ’s life in the world—meant to reflect heaven rather than hell. Yet, many have been hurt by institutions that resemble churches but operate like machines. This pain often leads to a common response: “I have a personal relationship with Jesus; I don’t need church.” Discover how authentic Christian community can heal these wounds and why rebuilding genuine relationships within the church is essential for transforming lives and the world around us.
