This is Jacob
Today’s message is centered around the profound truth found in Psalm 24. This psalm speaks of the King of Glory coming into Jerusalem, a monumental event symbolizing God’s presence among His people. Let’s delve deeper into this scripture and explore what it means for us today.
The King of Glory
Psalm 24 begins with a powerful declaration: “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” This statement reminds us that everything we see, including our very lives, belongs to God. As we read through verses seven to ten, we encounter a call to lift up our heads and welcome the King of Glory. Who is this King? The Lord, strong and mighty, is coming to dwell among His people.

This passage is not just a historical recount; it is a song sung by worshipers making their pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Each year, as they approached the city, they would remember the significance of the Ark of the Covenant arriving in Jerusalem. The Ark represented God’s presence, and its arrival marked a new era for the nation of Israel. Just imagine the excitement and anticipation of those worshipers as they sang these words!
The Significance of the Ark
Understanding the history of the Ark of the Covenant is crucial. At one point, the Israelites faced rebellion and were defeated in battle against the Philistines. Instead of seeking God’s guidance, they presumed that bringing the Ark into battle would secure victory. However, they were mistaken. The Ark was captured, and the Philistines celebrated their victory, unaware that God was still sovereign over all.

The Ark journeyed through the land of the Philistines, and everywhere it went, it demonstrated God’s power. Their god Dagon was destroyed in the presence of the Ark, revealing that God is supreme. This history serves as a reminder that God’s presence is not dependent on our actions; He remains holy and mighty regardless of our circumstances.
David’s Heart for the Ark
When David sought to bring the Ark to Jerusalem, his intentions were pure. However, he attempted to transport the Ark in a way that was not ordained by God. The Ark was meant to be carried by the Levites, but David placed it on a cart. When the cart stumbled, and Uzzah reached out to steady it, he was struck dead. This incident struck fear into David’s heart, prompting him to pause and reassess the situation.

Eventually, David learned from this mistake and brought the Ark to Jerusalem the right way, with reverence and obedience. This moment marked a significant shift for the nation of Israel, as God’s presence was restored among them. Psalm 24 encapsulates this journey, reminding us that we must approach God with clean hands and pure hearts.
Clean Hands and Pure Hearts
In our pursuit of God’s presence, we must recognize the importance of our actions and motives. Psalm 24:3-4 asks, “Who may ascend the hill of the Lord?” The answer is clear: “He who has clean hands and a pure heart.” This calls for self-examination and repentance. We cannot expect to dwell in God’s presence if our lives are marked by sin and rebellion.
Many people desire God’s blessings but neglect the prerequisites for receiving them. We live in a culture that often seeks immediate gratification, wanting everything without understanding the value of holiness and obedience. God desires a generation that seeks Him wholeheartedly—those who will establish His kingdom on earth.
The Heritage of Jacob
The phrase “This is Jacob” in Psalm 24:6 highlights the importance of knowing God personally. Jacob had a transformative encounter with God that changed his life. He went from knowing about God to knowing God intimately. We cannot rely solely on the faith of our ancestors or the rituals of our upbringing. Each of us must pursue a personal relationship with God.
Worship is a significant aspect of this relationship. Alexander McLaren said, “Worship is supreme admiration, culminating in imitation.” When we truly see God for who He is, we cannot help but be transformed into His likeness. Our desire to worship Him should compel us to live lives that reflect His holiness and character.
Resurrection Power
Our faith should not be merely intellectual or doctrinal. It must be rooted in the transformative power of the resurrection. Many believers today have experienced a genuine encounter with God but may find themselves drifting into complacency. We must remember the life-changing moments and the goodness of the Lord that drew us to Him in the first place.

As we reflect on this, we realize that nothing of value comes easily. The journey of faith requires us to contend for the truth and to seek God earnestly. The challenges we face are not meant to deter us but to strengthen our resolve and deepen our relationship with Him.
Returning to the Father
The parable of the prodigal son illustrates the heart of the Father. The son sought fulfillment in the world but found himself empty and broken. However, in his darkest moment, he remembered the goodness of his father and returned home. The father welcomed him with open arms, demonstrating boundless love and grace.
Just as the father embraced his son, God invites us to return to Him, regardless of our past mistakes. Holiness is not about living under a set of rules; it’s about restoring our relationship with Him. When we seek reconciliation, we find healing and restoration.
Embracing Holiness and Authenticity
As a church, we must strive for authenticity in our relationship with God. Many congregations today have become motivational centers, focusing on comfort over conviction. We need to embrace the beauty of holiness and recognize that it brings freedom and dignity to our lives.

God is calling us to a higher standard—a standard that reflects His character and glory. We must be willing to surrender our desires and ambitions for the sake of His kingdom. When we do this, we will witness the manifestation of His presence among us.
A Call to Action
As we conclude, I challenge you to examine your heart. Are there areas in your life that need reconciliation with God? Is there a mixture that needs to be purged? Come to Him with a broken and contrite heart, and He will restore you. Seek the Lord with all your heart, and you will find Him.
