What to Do When You Have Lost Your Will to Fight

Life can feel overwhelming at times, and there are moments when we all encounter a loss of will, especially when it comes to fighting for what we believe in or even for our own well-being. It’s easy to feel like you’re in a battle, but it’s the willingness to engage that often makes all the difference. Today, let’s explore how to reignite that will to fight, using personal stories and biblical insights as our guide.

The Importance of Purpose

When I think back to my time in the military, I remember the stark difference in leadership styles that shaped our morale and effectiveness. There was one Colonel who ruled with an iron fist, creating an environment devoid of joy or purpose. His leadership was marked by rigidity and a lack of genuine interest in the soldiers. Productivity plummeted, and there was no excitement. In stark contrast, another Colonel I served under prioritized the well-being of his troops, ensuring they had time off and fostering a sense of community. This simple act of caring transformed the atmosphere and our productivity soared.

In the same way, when we lose our will to fight, often it’s because we’ve lost sight of our purpose. We become like the first Colonel, going through the motions without the fire that drives us. It’s essential, especially in our faith, to remember that we are part of something greater. The sacrifices made by those who came before us, especially on days of remembrance, should inspire us to reignite our passion and purpose.

Understanding the Spiritual Battle

Life isn’t just a series of events; it’s a battlefield. The scriptures are filled with references to fighting, warfare, and the struggle against darkness. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” This scripture emphasizes that our battle is not merely physical but deeply spiritual.

Many of us have become complacent, allowing the weight of the world to dull our senses. We pray for help just to get through the day, instead of actively engaging in the fight against the principalities that seek to oppress us. This is where we must reclaim our role as warriors in faith. It’s not just about surviving; it’s about thriving and pushing back against the forces that wish to keep us down.

Reclaiming Your Will to Fight

So, how do we reclaim that will? First, we must acknowledge the spiritual forces at play. The enemy seeks to make us inoperative, to dull our senses, and to make us feel like we are fighting a losing battle. Here are some key steps to help you regain your will to fight:

1. Recognize Your Identity

It’s crucial to understand who you are in Christ. You are not defined by your struggles or your past failures. Romans 8:37 states, “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” Embracing this identity is the first step toward empowerment.

2. Take Initiative

Just like Shamgar, who used what he had to fight against the Philistines, we must also take initiative. We can’t wait for the perfect moment or the perfect tools. Sometimes, it’s about using what you already have—your faith, your community, and your voice—to make a difference.

3. Foster Sensitivity to the Spirit

We often become insensitive to the movement of God in our lives. We can get so caught up in our routines that we forget to listen. God desires to guide us, but we need to be attuned to His voice. This can involve quiet time, prayer, and seeking counsel from wise mentors.

4. Embrace Community

No one fights alone. Surround yourself with a community that encourages and uplifts you. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reminds us, “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow.” Engage in fellowship, share your struggles, and support one another in the fight.

5. Remember the Bigger Picture

Our struggles are not in vain. They serve a greater purpose. When we remember that our fight is not just for ourselves but for our families, communities, and even future generations, we start to see the importance of our battles. This perspective can reignite our passion and determination.

Confronting the Enemy

As we navigate our spiritual journey, we must confront the enemy head-on. The enemy thrives on our complacency and fears. When we become proactive in our faith, we can dismantle the strongholds that have been built around us. This requires courage and an understanding that victory is already ours through Christ.

We can look to biblical examples like David, who faced Goliath with nothing but a slingshot and faith. He didn’t back down from the fight; he stepped into his destiny. Similarly, we must step up and confront our giants with the belief that we are equipped to win.

Conclusion: The Will to Fight

The will to fight is not just about physical battles; it’s about spiritual warfare, emotional resilience, and the commitment to live out our faith daily. It’s about recognizing that we are called to be warriors, not just survivors. As we honor those who have fought before us, let us also embrace our own battles with courage and conviction. Remember, you are not alone in this fight; God is with you, and together with your community, you can reclaim your will to fight.

Let’s rise up, take initiative, and engage in the battle that is ours to fight. Your story is not over; it’s just the beginning of a new chapter filled with hope, purpose, and the will to fight.

Authentic Relational Church — The Jerusalem Model

Christianity can appear successful by worldly standards—big buildings and large attendance—yet still miss the transforming power Jesus intended. When the church is organized by systems instead of organic, family-shaped relationships, it often fails to reflect heaven on earth. The heart of the problem is structural. A mechanistic church produces mechanical results, while a church rooted in belonging and the gospel brings life, healing, and renewal. The dream is simple: every person experiences love, welcome, and a personal encounter with Jesus. Discover how the early church’s model can inspire a thriving, relational community today.
