Before Winter Comes

In our journey through life, we often find ourselves at crossroads, moments that challenge our faith and resilience. Recently, I had an experience that reminded me of the importance of being prepared for the winters of life, both practically and spiritually. This reflection comes from a visit to my liver doctor in Houston, where I was reminded of the vital role we all play in each other’s lives.

The Power of Influence

During my visit, I was struck by a conversation with my liver doctor and their team. They expressed a desire for spiritual support, asking me to pray for them and others in their team. It was a humbling moment, reminding me that regardless of our professions—be it a minister, a plumber, or a business owner—we all have a sphere of influence. Each of us is called to be a witness for Christ in our daily lives.

The word “witness” carries a profound meaning. It signifies that we have died to ourselves and risen anew in Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit to minister to those around us. I recall a survey conducted at a ministerial gathering where 97% of the attendees came to faith through personal relationships rather than large evangelistic events. This highlights the significance of friendship evangelism—the idea that genuine connections often lead to spiritual transformations.

The Need for Love

At the core of our existence are two fundamental needs: to love and to be loved. This is intricately woven into the fabric of our being. Jesus emphasized this in the greatest commandments: to love God with all our heart and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Many struggles, especially mental health issues, stem from a lack of love and connection. We are designed to be relational beings, and it’s crucial that we meet each other’s needs for love and support.

Preparing for Winter

As we delve into the message today, aptly titled “Before Winter Comes,” we turn to the scriptures for guidance. In 2 Timothy 4:11, Paul, in the twilight of his life, encourages Timothy to be prepared. He understands that winter is not just a season; it represents challenges and trials we will inevitably face. It is essential to prepare ourselves spiritually and practically for these times.

Paul’s request for his cloak and books underscores the importance of both physical and spiritual preparation. His cloak symbolizes practical needs, while his desire for books represents the continuous pursuit of knowledge and understanding. Paul, even after years of being taught by Christ, recognized that there is always more to learn. This attitude of humility is crucial for all of us.

The Journey of Learning

Education, as Socrates noted, should humble us rather than inflate our egos. The more we learn, the more we realize how little we truly know. Paul’s insistence on having his books reminds us that learning should never cease. It is through constant engagement with God’s word that we grow and develop spiritually. The Bible is alive, and every reading can reveal something new.

Facing Opposition

Throughout his journey, Paul faced significant opposition and harm, notably from Alexander the coppersmith. In our own lives, we may encounter individuals who resist our efforts to spread the gospel or challenge our beliefs. It’s vital to remember that our choices have consequences, both good and bad. Standing firm in our faith may sometimes lead to isolation, but we should take comfort in the fact that the Lord is with us, strengthening us.

God’s Faithfulness

Paul reassures us that despite his chains and trials, God remained faithful. Even in moments of despair, the Lord stood with him, empowering him to spread the gospel. This is a promise we can hold onto: God will never leave us nor forsake us. Our mission is to share this message of hope, love, and redemption with those around us.

Understanding Deliverance

Deliverance doesn’t always mean being spared from hardships. Instead, it signifies that no evil will ultimately triumph over us. Life may throw challenges our way, but we can rest in the assurance that God is our protector and deliverer. He preserves us for His kingdom, and we are reminded that the kingdom of God is not just a future hope; it is present in our lives now.

Practical Preparations

As we prepare for the winters of our lives, we must consider practical steps. Paul’s advice to Timothy serves as a guide for us. We should ensure we have our affairs in order—be it financial, relational, or spiritual. Just as the Boy Scouts emphasize preparedness, we too should be ready for whatever life may bring.

The Importance of Community

In moments of trial, the strength of community becomes evident. Paul’s encouragement to Timothy to come before winter is a call for togetherness. We need each other, especially during difficult times. As a church community, we must support one another, lifting each other up in prayer and encouragement.

Anchors for the Storms of Life

Paul faced many storms, both literal and metaphorical. In Acts 27, we see him on a ship caught in a tempest. He teaches us valuable lessons about stability, unity, renewal, and reality. These anchors are essential as we navigate life’s storms.

  • Anchor of Stability: Our relationship with Christ provides the foundation we need to face life’s uncertainties.
  • Anchor of Unity: Together, we find strength. Unity in faith binds us as a community.
  • Anchor of Renewal: Regularly renewing our spirits through prayer, worship, and fellowship is vital.
  • Anchor of Reality: We must assess our lives honestly, recognizing the truth of our situations.

The Secret Sauce

What was Paul’s secret sauce? It was his ability to learn contentment in all circumstances. This wasn’t innate; it was cultivated through habits of forgiveness, gratitude, and humility. As we strive to emulate Paul, we too can develop a nature that reflects Christ’s love and grace.

Conclusion: Embracing the Journey

As we conclude this message, I want to remind you that you are not alone in your struggles. Together, as a community, we can weather any storm. Let us encourage one another, pray for one another, and be the hands and feet of Christ in this world. Remember, winter is coming, but with preparation and unity, we can face it with hope and joy.

Let us pray together, seeking God’s guidance and strength as we navigate the path ahead, trusting that He is with us every step of the way.

Why You Feel Alone in a Crowded Church

One of the great tragedies of modern Christianity is that many people can sit in a room full of believers and still feel profoundly alone. Authentic Relational Church — The Jerusalem Model

Christianity can appear successful by worldly standards—big buildings and large attendance—yet still miss the transforming power Jesus intended. When the church is organized by systems instead of organic, family-shaped relationships, it often fails to reflect heaven on earth. The heart of the problem is structural. A mechanistic church produces mechanical results, while a church rooted in belonging and the gospel brings life, healing, and renewal. The dream is simple: every person experiences love, welcome, and a personal encounter with Jesus. Discover how the early church’s model can inspire a thriving, relational community today.
