The World is Groaning

In times of uncertainty and distress, it’s common to question God’s role in our struggles. Instead of asking why God is doing this, we should focus on the deeper questions: What is God doing, and how can we find hope in the midst of turmoil? Today, we’ll explore the message of hope that emerged with the birth of Jesus Christ, a story that offers profound relevance to our current situation.

The Birth of Hope

One of the greatest messages of hope that entered the world was the birth of Jesus Christ. You might wonder why we’re discussing Christmas during challenging times, but the parallels are striking. Just as the wise men traveled from the East, guided by a star to honor the newborn king, we too seek direction and hope in our lives.

The wise men understood that the star represented the arrival of the King of the Jews, a beacon of hope for humanity. They journeyed to Jerusalem, only to find themselves confused when the star disappeared. Seeking guidance, they approached the religious leaders who informed them that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem. This moment captures the essence of our own search for hope in a world filled with uncertainty.

The Threat of Darkness

Upon leaving Jerusalem, the star reappeared, leading the wise men to Jesus. After worshiping Him, they were warned in a dream of King Herod’s murderous intent. This reflects a disturbing reality: a totalitarian government, threatened by the light of hope, sought to extinguish it. Herod’s brutal decree to kill all male children in Bethlehem showcases the depths of human evil.

Matthew 2:16-18 depicts this tragic event, where Rachel weeps for her children, highlighting the heart-wrenching suffering inflicted upon innocent lives. It’s a stark reminder that evil exists in our world, a reality that resonates with today’s struggles, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The world is groaning under the weight of sin, and it’s crucial to acknowledge this pain.

Understanding Our Context

In 1 Corinthians 2:6-8, Paul contrasts the wisdom of this age with the hidden wisdom of God. The rulers of the age may seem powerful, but they are ultimately coming to nothing. God’s wisdom, however, is working behind the scenes, often unnoticed. Paul emphasizes that if the rulers had recognized the truth, they would not have crucified Jesus. This principle is essential for understanding our current situation.

Even in times of great suffering, God is at work. The story of Joseph serves as a powerful example. Sold into slavery by his brothers, Joseph faced immense hardship. Yet, he maintained his faith in God, ultimately rising to a position of power in Egypt. When a famine struck, his brothers sought help from him, leading to a profound moment of reconciliation. Joseph’s words, “What you meant for evil, God meant for good,” resonate deeply in our own journeys.

Hope Amidst Groaning

The world’s current groaning is palpable, echoing the cries of suffering in the past. As we navigate through challenges, we must remember that God is present, ready to bring hope and healing. Just as God worked through Joseph’s trials, He is at work in our lives today, turning our struggles into opportunities for growth and redemption.

The Role of the Holy Spirit

In the midst of uncertainty, we can look to the story of Zacharias, who served in the temple when the angel Gabriel appeared to him with a life-changing message. Zacharias was told that he would have a son named John, who would prepare the way for Jesus. Despite his doubts, the angel assured him that God’s plans would come to fruition.

Zacharias’ muteness became a sign of God’s work, underscoring the importance of divine timing and purpose. When John was born, Zacharias proclaimed, “Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people.” This proclamation of hope reminds us that even when we cannot see the full picture, God is actively working to fulfill His promises.

Proclaiming the Good News

The Holy Spirit empowers us to share this message of hope with others. As we experience the transformative power of God in our lives, we become vessels of hope for those around us. Our role is to connect others with the source of life, Jesus Christ, and to demonstrate His love and grace in a world that desperately needs it.

Responding to the Current Crisis

As we face the realities of a global pandemic, it’s essential to recognize the fear and uncertainty that permeate our society. While it’s natural to feel concern for our health and well-being, we must also focus on sharing the peace that comes from knowing Christ. Our hope is not rooted in circumstances but in the eternal promises of God.

Let us remember that loss is still loss, and we must mourn with those who mourn. Jesus Himself wept at the death of Lazarus, showing us the importance of compassion in times of grief. It’s crucial for us to reach out to those in need, offering support and encouragement, reflecting the love of Christ.

A Greater Context

In the broader context of our nation’s history, we have witnessed significant changes over the past few years. Despite the challenges we face, there is a movement toward preserving religious liberty and upholding foundational principles. While fear may drive some to seek government solutions, we must point others to the true source of hope: Jesus Christ.

The Call to Action

Each of us has a role to play in this unfolding story. We need to promote a biblical faith that builds our lives on the truth of Scripture. For those who may not share our faith, we can still appeal to natural law, encouraging moral clarity in a world that often blurs the lines between good and evil.

Ultimately, our mission is to foster personal relationships with Jesus Christ. As we grow in our faith, we become confident in God’s goodness, and this confidence fuels our hope for the future. We are called to be ambassadors of Christ, sharing His love and light in a world that is groaning for redemption.

The Birth Pains of Transformation

Just as the early church experienced birth pains through persecution, we too are witnessing a transformation in our world. The challenges we face can serve as catalysts for growth, pushing us to seek God more fervently and share His message with others. The early church thrived amidst adversity, and we can do the same.

Conclusion: A Message of Hope

The world is groaning, but it is also a time of great opportunity for the Church to rise and shine. In Romans 8:18-22, Paul reminds us that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in us. Creation itself eagerly awaits the revealing of the sons of God, and we have the privilege of being part of this divine plan.

As we navigate these challenging times, let us hold fast to the hope that transcends our circumstances. The world is longing for a cure—not just for physical ailments but for the fear of death and hopelessness. We have the answer in Jesus Christ, and it’s time for us to share that hope with a world in need.

In conclusion, let us be a beacon of light amidst the darkness, proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ and offering hope to those who are hurting. Together, we can make a difference and bring the message of hope to a groaning world.

Authentic Relational Church — The Jerusalem Model

Christianity can appear successful by worldly standards—big buildings and large attendance—yet still miss the transforming power Jesus intended. When the church is organized by systems instead of organic, family-shaped relationships, it often fails to reflect heaven on earth. The heart of the problem is structural. A mechanistic church produces mechanical results, while a church rooted in belonging and the gospel brings life, healing, and renewal. The dream is simple: every person experiences love, welcome, and a personal encounter with Jesus. Discover how the early church’s model can inspire a thriving, relational community today.
