Start, Stop, Continue: Embracing Change for Growth

As we step into a new year, it’s a perfect time to reflect on our lives and consider how we can improve. The message today revolves around the concept of “Start, Stop, Continue.” This isn’t just a catchy phrase; it’s a powerful framework that can help us navigate our personal and spiritual journeys.

Understanding Discontentment

Discontentment often gets a bad rap, but it can be a catalyst for change. Many of us experience moments of distress, debt, or discontent, just like the individuals who gathered around David in 1 Samuel 22:2. These feelings are not just burdens; they signal that something needs to change.

When we feel discontent, it’s usually because we know there’s something better out there for us. Just think about the Israelites in Egypt. Their cries for help reached God when their discontent became unbearable. God responded by leading them out of slavery, showing us that discontent can lead to liberation.

God Sees the Heart

In the story of David, God chose him not for his outward appearance but for his heart. This reminds us that our worth is not determined by our circumstances or how others perceive us. God looks beyond our flaws and sees our potential.

Samuel was hesitant to follow God’s command to anoint David, fearing for his life. But God reassured him, emphasizing that He sees what lies within us. This is a comforting thought: even when we feel inadequate, God sees our true value.

The Role of Discontentment in Revival

Revival often emerges from discontentment. When we become dissatisfied with our current state, we start to seek change. Jesus invited those who were thirsty to come to Him, indicating that He welcomes the discontented. It’s through these feelings that we can spark a revival within ourselves and our communities.

Discontentment can push us to seek God more fervently. It’s during these times of longing that we often hear His voice the clearest. Just as the Israelites cried out for liberation, we must recognize our own cries for help and allow God to work through them.

Transforming Weakness into Strength

Everyone has weaknesses, but they don’t have to define us. Winston Churchill, for instance, faced significant challenges, including a speech impediment. Instead of letting these weaknesses hold him back, he worked diligently to overcome them, ultimately becoming a powerful orator and leader.

Similarly, King David, despite being seen as an outsider, excelled in his duties as a shepherd. He didn’t allow his circumstances to dictate his worth. Instead, he embraced his role and performed it with excellence, which prepared him for greater things ahead.

The Importance of Perseverance

Perseverance is key when facing challenges. Life will throw obstacles our way, and it’s crucial to bounce back quickly from defeats. Accepting defeat can lead to bitterness, as seen in some who lost everything during economic downturns. However, those who maintain their faith and continue to work hard often find greater success.

Like the three friends who rebuilt their lives after losing everything, we must remember that our resilience can lead to more significant blessings. God rewards those who persistently seek Him, even in tough times.

Stand on Principles

In navigating life’s challenges, standing on principles is essential. It’s easy to compromise when faced with difficulties, but our core values should guide our actions. By adhering to our principles, we can remain grounded and make decisions that align with our true selves.

When we stay true to our beliefs, we not only honor ourselves but also inspire others to do the same. Our integrity becomes a beacon of hope for those around us who may be struggling.

Innovate and Embrace Change

Change can be daunting, but it’s also an opportunity for growth. Embracing innovation allows us to adapt and improve our lives continually. When we recognize that change can lead to better outcomes, we become more open to new possibilities.

Take the time to assess what isn’t working in your life. What barriers are holding you back? Identifying these areas is the first step toward making meaningful changes.

Conclusion: Start, Stop, Continue

As we move forward into the new year, let’s commit to a “Start, Stop, Continue” mindset. Start embracing your discontent as a catalyst for change. Stop letting your weaknesses define your worth. Continue to seek God’s guidance in all aspects of your life.

By adopting this framework, we not only enhance our personal journeys but also contribute to the growth of those around us. Let’s encourage one another to reflect, adapt, and thrive in the year ahead.

Authentic Relational Church — The Jerusalem Model

Christianity can appear successful by worldly standards—big buildings and large attendance—yet still miss the transforming power Jesus intended. When the church is organized by systems instead of organic, family-shaped relationships, it often fails to reflect heaven on earth. The heart of the problem is structural. A mechanistic church produces mechanical results, while a church rooted in belonging and the gospel brings life, healing, and renewal. The dream is simple: every person experiences love, welcome, and a personal encounter with Jesus. Discover how the early church’s model can inspire a thriving, relational community today.
