More Than a Casual Observer
In a world filled with chaos and confusion, finding clarity and purpose can feel like an uphill battle. The times we’re living in are serious, and the challenges we face are daunting. Yet, amidst the noise, there is a call to become more than just casual observers in our own lives and in the world around us.

Understanding Our Times
Paul, in Romans 1, paints a vivid picture of the human condition when people turn away from God. The downward spiral begins with a refusal to acknowledge Him, leading to a life enslaved by personal passions and desires. This is a tragic state, one that many of us can relate to at some point in our lives.
Yet, God is patient, not wanting anyone to perish. However, there is a tipping point where lawlessness and iniquity bring about judgment. This isn’t just a biblical concept; it’s a reality we witness in our world today. The sons of Issachar understood their times and knew what to do. Similarly, we are called to discern our times and respond accordingly.
A Call to Repentance
The story of Israel’s captivity serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of turning away from God. It took judgment and captivity for the nation to consider repentance and seek God wholeheartedly. Jeremiah 29:11-13 captures God’s heart: He desires to prosper us, not harm us, and promises that if we seek Him with all our hearts, we will find Him.
In the past year, we’ve faced incredible crises—political, financial, biological, and physical. However, the underlying issue is a moral sickness that has afflicted our society. Troubles have a way of revealing what’s wrong and out of order. This year has highlighted many areas in our lives and even within the church that need realignment with God’s purposes.

The Need for a Shaking
Sometimes, God allows a shaking to wake us up and remove obstacles to the intimate relationship He desires with us. Whether it’s a nation, a family, or an individual, this shaking is necessary to bring us back to order. Programs like AA and Celebrate Recovery recognize that our lives become unmanageable, prompting us to seek change and be open to new solutions.
We often play the blame game, pointing fingers at circumstances and people around us, but the real issue lies within us. It’s only when we hit rock bottom that we’re willing to try something different. In those moments, we hear a voice calling us to a new way of life, filled with peace and purpose.

Setting Our Hearts to Hear from Heaven
Amidst the shaking, there is also a stirring in our hearts. We must set our hearts to hear from heaven, tuning out the distractions and voices vying for our attention. God is relentless in His pursuit of us, desiring what belongs to Him. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and we are not our own.
Like the lost coin, sheep, and son in Jesus’ parables, God is determined to find us when we are lost. He wants to renew a right spirit within us, bringing order and peace through sweet surrender to His lordship.

More Than Casual Observers
In this season of chaos, we are called to be more than casual observers. We cannot afford to sit back and let life pass us by. The church, individually and corporately, must rise to be a voice of hope and truth in a time of crisis. We need to reposition ourselves, refocus, and revive our spirits.
Finding the eye of the storm, the place of peace amidst turmoil, is crucial. It requires surrendering to God’s good governance over our lives. There is always an “if” and a “then” with God. If we humble ourselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from our ways, then He will hear us, forgive us, and heal our land.
The Importance of Intimacy with God
God doesn’t reveal Himself to the casual observer. He desires a deep, personal relationship with us. It’s not about gathering information but about heart transformation. It’s about surrendering our lives to His benevolent laws and allowing Him to govern our lives.
We must return to our first love, rekindling the passion and devotion we once had. It’s time to reposition ourselves, repent, and prioritize what truly matters. God has a plan for us, a future filled with hope, but it requires seeking Him with all our hearts.

A Season of Opportunity
Despite the challenges, this season presents an opportunity for the church to rise and fulfill its calling. It’s a time to access God in a deeper way, to see our identity and responsibilities as His people. We must seek the Lord while He is near, not letting this season pass without responding to His call.
David’s desire to build a temple for God, although fulfilled by Solomon, showed the importance of putting God first. The temple represented God’s presence and power, and its dedication brought about worship and the filling of God’s glory. We need the presence of the Lord and His glory back in our lives and churches.

Conclusion: Seeking His Glory
As we navigate these turbulent times, let us not be content with being mere observers. Let’s actively pursue the presence and glory of God in our lives. His call to us is clear: seek Him with all our hearts, and we will find Him. The glory of God is what will make the difference in our lives, our families, and our nation.
May we respond to this call, not with fear, but with hope and determination. Let us be more than casual observers, stepping into the fullness of what God has for us. Amen.
