The Work of the Holy Spirit and the Church

Understanding Eternity in Our Hearts

Have you ever felt that deep longing for something more? The idea that God has placed eternity in our hearts resonates with many of us. It’s a reminder that while we may have a sense of eternity, it doesn’t automatically mean we have a future. The word “future” comes from a Latin word, esse, which means “to be.” Our future is a glorious promise waiting to unfold, but it requires us to seek a relationship with Christ to fully realize it.

Returning from Vietnam, I was filled with dreams and aspirations, yet life had a way of slapping those dreams down. I returned disillusioned, struggling to find my place in a world that didn’t seem to want me. The hurt and disillusionment left me searching for meaning, battling the pain of my past while trying to navigate a future that felt bleak.

The Search for Healing

When we lack a future, we often search for ways to fill that void, turning to various distractions—be it pride, intellect, or other temporary pleasures. I found myself in this cycle, desperately seeking fulfillment. My upbringing didn’t offer much in terms of spiritual guidance; we were good people, but we didn’t attend church or pray. I was unaware of the richness of God’s word, and it left me feeling lost.

During this tumultuous time, I stumbled upon a church service that changed everything. I was drawn in, not knowing why I was there, but I felt the pull of something greater. The message I heard was about the heartbreak of God—a concept that struck a chord deep within me. God’s grief over humanity’s sin was palpable, and I began to reflect on my own actions and their impacts.

Embracing the Heartbreak of God

As I listened to the message, I realized that every one of us carries wounds. We’ve all been hurt and, in turn, have hurt others. Sometimes, these hurts drown out our ability to see a future. But God intervenes. He seeks to heal our hearts, and that healing opens the door to a future filled with hope.

In my journey, I often reached out to fellow ministers for guidance, looking for confirmation and clarity. One such minister shared a powerful experience he had during worship, where the Holy Spirit fell upon the congregation, leading them to deep repentance and healing. God’s desire is to heal His people, to breathe life into our dead places, and to restore our future.

The Power of Prophecy and the Breath of Life

In Ezekiel 37, we find the story of the valley of dry bones—a powerful metaphor for those who feel lifeless and without hope. God commands Ezekiel to prophesy to the winds, to breathe life into the slain. When he obeyed, the bones came together, and the breath of God filled them, transforming them into a mighty army. This illustrates that God can breathe life into our dead dreams and aspirations, giving us a future.

Many of us may feel like those dry bones—disillusioned and devoid of hope. But just like the demoniac in the graveyard, we can be set free. Jesus came to restore hope to the hopeless. He doesn’t just want us to live; He wants us to thrive and have a future filled with purpose.

The Role of the Holy Spirit

Jesus tells us in John 3:5 that we must be born of water and the Spirit to enter the kingdom of God. The Holy Spirit is the key to unlocking our future. He guides us, comforts us, and empowers us to live out the calling God has placed on our lives. Like the wind, we cannot see Him, but we can feel His presence and witness His effects in our lives.

When the Day of Pentecost arrived, the Holy Spirit came upon the believers like a mighty rushing wind. This wasn’t a gentle breeze; it was a powerful force that filled the entire house. The sovereignty of the Holy Spirit is evident in how He moves among us, bringing transformation and renewal. It’s essential to recognize that without the Holy Spirit, the church is lifeless. We need His presence to guide us into our future.

The Invitation to Experience the Holy Spirit

Every time we gather, there’s an invitation from God to experience His presence. The Holy Spirit constantly beckons us to come closer, to seek Him with our whole hearts. Whether we feel overwhelmed or unsure, He offers us a chance to encounter Him and receive the healing we need.

When I finally stepped forward in faith, I experienced the tangible presence of God. I was filled with the Holy Spirit in a way I had never imagined. The transformation was profound—I left behind the chains of my past and stepped into a future filled with hope and purpose. The Holy Spirit empowered me to live differently, to embrace my identity as a child of God.

The Gifts and Fruits of the Spirit

As we grow in our relationship with the Holy Spirit, we begin to see the gifts He provides. These gifts are meant for the common good, to build up the body of Christ and to further His kingdom. The fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness—becomes evident in our lives, reflecting the character of Christ.

Each of us has unique gifts that God has bestowed upon us, and it’s crucial to use them in our daily lives. Whether in our workplaces, families, or communities, these gifts are tools for ministry. As we bear fruit, we become vessels of God’s love and grace, impacting those around us.

Forgiveness and the Future

Forgiveness is a powerful theme in our journey with the Holy Spirit. Just as we have been forgiven, we are called to extend forgiveness to others. Holding onto grudges and resentment can hinder our ability to move forward. The story of the unforgiving servant reminds us that we must forgive others as we have been forgiven.

When we practice forgiveness, we open ourselves to healing and restoration. It’s a vital step toward embracing our future and allowing God to work in our lives. Forgiveness isn’t just a one-time act; it’s a continual process that requires grace and humility.

Living in the Spirit

As we continue to grow in our faith, we must actively seek to live in the Spirit. This means being led by Him, walking in His ways, and allowing Him to guide our decisions. The more we surrender to the Holy Spirit, the more we will experience the fullness of life that Jesus promised.

We need to cultivate a relationship with the Holy Spirit, seeking His guidance in every aspect of our lives. It’s in this relationship that we find our true purpose and calling. As we pursue God, He reveals our future and equips us to fulfill His plans.

Conclusion: A Future in the Spirit

In conclusion, the work of the Holy Spirit is vital for the church and for each believer. He breathes life into our dreams, heals our wounds, and empowers us to live out our calling. As we embrace the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives, we can step into a future filled with hope, purpose, and transformation.

Let’s open our hearts to the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to lead us into the fullness of life that God has in store for us. Together, as a church, we can experience the transformative power of the Holy Spirit and impact the world around us.

Authentic Relational Church — The Jerusalem Model

Christianity can appear successful by worldly standards—big buildings and large attendance—yet still miss the transforming power Jesus intended. When the church is organized by systems instead of organic, family-shaped relationships, it often fails to reflect heaven on earth. The heart of the problem is structural. A mechanistic church produces mechanical results, while a church rooted in belonging and the gospel brings life, healing, and renewal. The dream is simple: every person experiences love, welcome, and a personal encounter with Jesus. Discover how the early church’s model can inspire a thriving, relational community today.
