The Living Fountain: Rediscovering the Power of Prayer
In a world where religion often feels stale and irrelevant, Pastor Bill Brannan’s message reveals how prayer can rejuvenate our faith and transform our lives. By exploring biblical examples and emphasizing the need for a genuine relationship with God, we can rediscover the vibrant essence of Christianity as a living fountain of power and hope.
Religion Declined Because It Became Irrelevant
Religion often faces decline not due to external challenges, but because it fails to resonate with the hearts of individuals. When faith is reduced to mere ritual, devoid of substance and vitality, it becomes irrelevant. People seek meaning, connection, and transformation, yet when religion becomes a set of rules or traditions, it loses its power to inspire.
In many cases, the message of faith becomes diluted, focusing on performance rather than genuine relationship. As a result, individuals may drift away, feeling disenchanted with a faith that seems lifeless. Revitalizing religion requires a return to its core essence—a living, breathing relationship with the divine that captivates and transforms.

To rekindle relevance, we must embrace the awe and wonder that comes from encountering the divine. Reconnecting with the heart of faith involves recognizing the miraculous and the life-changing power of a relationship with God, rather than adhering to outdated practices that no longer speak to the soul.
The 70s Teenager
The experience of a teenager in the 1970s illustrates the disconnect that can occur within religious contexts. Growing up in an environment steeped in Christian values, many found themselves straying from the faith as the cultural landscape shifted. This individual’s testimony highlights how a rigid, rule-based approach to Christianity can fail to engage the heart and mind.
As they reflected on their journey, it became clear that the lack of relevance in their faith led to rebellion. Instead of feeling uplifted and inspired, they encountered a system that felt constraining and uninspiring. It is essential to understand that the essence of faith must be vibrant and transformative, capable of captivating the imagination of the youth.

This reflection serves as a call to action for churches and faith communities to engage younger generations meaningfully. By fostering an environment of exploration and awe, religion can reclaim its place as a powerful force for good in the lives of individuals, especially the youth.
Restoring Awe and Wonder
Restoring awe and wonder in faith is crucial for revitalizing a sense of purpose and connection. It begins with recognizing the miraculous nature of God and the beauty of creation. When believers encounter God’s presence, their hearts are ignited with passion and zeal, transforming mundane rituals into profound experiences.
One way to foster this sense of wonder is through prayer and worship. These practices should not be mere obligations but opportunities for genuine encounters with the divine. Engaging with scripture, not as an ancient text but as a living document that speaks to today, can awaken a new appreciation for faith.

Additionally, sharing testimonies of God’s faithfulness can inspire awe. When individuals recount their experiences of divine intervention or personal transformation, it encourages others to seek similar encounters. This communal aspect of faith can reignite passion and purpose, drawing people back to the living fountain of God’s presence.
Understanding 1 Timothy 2:1-6
In 1 Timothy 2:1-6, Paul emphasizes the importance of prayer within the church. He urges believers to offer prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving for all people, particularly those in authority. This directive is significant as it connects the act of prayer with the pursuit of a peaceful and godly life.
Prayer is not merely a ritual; it is an avenue through which believers invite God’s intervention in the world. The call to pray for leaders is rooted in the desire for a society where faith can flourish. When the church prioritizes prayer, it cultivates an environment where the presence of God can transform hearts and minds.

Moreover, this passage highlights the universal scope of God’s desire for salvation. It reminds believers that God’s heart is for all humanity, and through prayer, they participate in His redemptive work. Understanding the depth of this scripture can inspire a renewed commitment to prayer as a powerful tool for change.
Pray for All Men: A Call to Action
The call to pray for all men is a powerful invitation to engage in intercession. This practice extends beyond personal needs, urging believers to lift up their communities, nations, and even adversaries. It challenges the notion of exclusivity in prayer and emphasizes a heart of compassion for all people.
Intercessory prayer is a means of advocating for others, believing that God can intervene in their lives. This act of selflessness reflects the character of Christ, who intercedes on behalf of humanity. By embracing this call to action, believers can be agents of change, paving the way for reconciliation and healing in a fractured world.

When communities unite in prayer, they create a powerful force that can influence society. The collective voice of believers can usher in transformation, leading to a culture that reflects God’s love and justice. This call to action is not just a personal commitment but a communal responsibility.
Elisha and His Servant: A Lesson in Faith
The story of Elisha and his servant in 2 Kings 6:8-23 serves as a poignant reminder of the power of faith. When the servant is overwhelmed by the sight of the enemy army surrounding them, Elisha’s calm assurance reveals a deeper reality—the presence of God’s heavenly host.
Elisha’s prayer for his servant’s eyes to be opened illustrates the importance of spiritual perception. Many believers today may find themselves fixated on their circumstances, failing to recognize the divine support that surrounds them. This narrative encourages a shift in perspective, reminding us that God is always at work, even when we cannot see it.

Faith, as demonstrated by Elisha, is not merely a belief in the unseen but an active trust in God’s faithfulness. This story encourages believers to cultivate a faith that sees beyond immediate challenges, recognizing God’s sovereignty and power to intervene. By embracing this lesson, believers can navigate life’s uncertainties with confidence and hope.
The Power of Faith in Everyday Life
Faith is not just a theoretical concept; it is a practical force that can transform everyday life. When individuals live out their faith in tangible ways, they become conduits of God’s love and grace. This active faith empowers them to face challenges, serve others, and impact their communities positively.
In daily interactions, believers can embody the principles of their faith—showing kindness, offering support, and standing for justice. These actions create ripples of change, demonstrating the relevance of faith in a world that often feels chaotic and uncertain.

Moreover, the power of faith extends into personal struggles. When individuals lean on their faith during difficult times, they tap into a source of strength that surpasses human understanding. This resilience reflects the life-giving nature of a faith that is rooted in a relationship with God, not mere tradition.
The Power of Scripture in Spiritual Growth
Scripture is more than historical text; it is a living guide that shapes our spiritual journey. Engaging with the Word allows us to encounter God in profound ways. It teaches, corrects, and equips us for every good work, igniting a passion that fuels our faith.
When we approach scripture with an open heart, we invite transformation. The stories within it are not just lessons but pathways to deeper understanding and connection. Each verse carries the potential to change our perspective and deepen our relationship with God.

Moreover, scripture provides clarity in times of confusion. It acts as a compass, guiding us through life’s challenges. By meditating on biblical truths, we can find peace amid chaos and strength in our weaknesses.
How to Experience God for Yourself
Experiencing God is a personal journey, unique to each individual. It requires intention and openness to the divine presence. You may find God in quiet moments of prayer, in the beauty of nature, or through acts of service to others.
To cultivate this experience, set aside time for reflection and prayer. Engage with God authentically, expressing your thoughts and feelings. This dialogue fosters a deeper connection and allows you to sense His presence in your life.

Additionally, be attentive to the ways God communicates with you. It may be through scripture, a conversation with a friend, or a stirring in your heart. Recognizing these moments is crucial for nurturing your relationship with Him.
Find What Lights Your Soul: Discovering Passion
Discovering your passion is essential for a vibrant spiritual life. It’s about identifying what stirs your soul and ignites your enthusiasm. This could be anything from helping others to creating art or pursuing education.
Take time to explore different activities and interests. What brings you joy? What makes you feel alive? Engaging in these passions not only fulfills you but also allows you to express God’s love through your gifts.

Remember, your passion is a reflection of God’s creativity. Embrace it, nurture it, and let it guide you in serving others and glorifying Him. When you align your life with your passions, you become a beacon of light in your community.
Every Member Does Their Part in Community
The beauty of community lies in its diversity. Each member brings unique gifts and talents, contributing to the body of Christ. Recognizing and celebrating these differences fosters unity and growth.
It’s essential to encourage one another in our respective roles. Whether you are an encourager like Barnabas or a leader like Paul, your contribution matters. Each function is vital for the health of the community and the advancement of God’s kingdom.

In this interconnectedness, we find strength. When we work together, we can accomplish far more than we could alone. Let’s embrace our unique gifts and collaborate to build a thriving community that reflects God’s love.
Seek God Authentically: A Personal Journey
Seeking God authentically involves a willingness to be vulnerable. It means laying aside pretenses and engaging with Him as you truly are. This authenticity invites deeper intimacy and a more profound understanding of His character.
Be honest about your struggles, doubts, and fears. God desires a genuine relationship with you, not one built on perfection. In your vulnerability, you may discover His grace and love in ways you never expected.

As you navigate your journey, remember that seeking God is not a destination but a continual process. Embrace the journey, and allow it to deepen your faith and understanding of His presence in your life.
The World is Dying for an Awakening: A Spiritual Urgency
Our world is in desperate need of spiritual awakening. People are searching for hope, purpose, and connection. As believers, we are called to respond to this urgency by being vessels of God’s love and truth.
Awakening begins within our hearts. We must first seek God earnestly and allow Him to transform us. As we experience His love, we become equipped to share that transformation with others.

Moreover, we must actively engage with our communities. This could be through acts of kindness, sharing our testimonies, or simply being present with those in need. Each action contributes to a larger movement of awakening that can change lives.
In conclusion, let’s embrace the call to awaken our spirits and share the living fountain of God with the world. Together, we can turn the tide and bring hope to those who are yearning for a deeper connection with the divine.
Preaching Outline
A Living Fountain
(Preaching Notes)
1) I want to begin by reading a quote from Joshua Heschel – It is customary to blame secular science and anti-religious philosophy for the eclipse of religion in modern society. It would be more honest to blame religion for its own defeats. Religion declined not because it was refuted, but because it became irrelevant, dull, oppressive, insipid. When faith is completely replaced by creed, worship by discipline, love by habit; when the crisis of today is ignored because of the splendor of the past; when faith becomes an heirloom rather than a living fountain; when religion speaks only in the name of authority rather than with the voice of compassion—its message becomes meaningless.[1]
a) I chose to begin with that quote because of a discussion I had this week with someone who was a teenager in the 70’s
b) I have been wrestling with, How do we cause religion to become a living fountain once again?
c) Restoring a sense of awe and wonder
2) 1 Timothy 2:1–6 (NKJV) — 1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time,

b) Paul & Herod
c) Scripture is filled with amazing stories of how people experience God, how God acts in response to prayer, and how the world benefits from those that walk with God.

e) An example from the OT that highlights this passage well:
i) 2 Kings 6:8–13 (NKJV) — 8 Now the king of Syria was making war against Israel; and he consulted with his servants, saying, “My camp will be in such and such a place.” 9 And the man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, “Beware that you do not pass this place, for the Syrians are coming down there.” 10 Then the king of Israel sent someone to the place of which the man of God had told him. Thus he warned him, and he was watchful there, not just once or twice. 11 Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was greatly troubled by this thing; and he called his servants and said to them, “Will you not show me which of us is for the king of Israel?” 12 And one of his servants said, “None, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.” 13 So he said, “Go and see where he is, that I may send and get him.” And it was told him, saying, “Surely he is in Dothan.”
ii) 2 Kings 6:14–18 (NKJV) — 14 Therefore he sent horses and chariots and a great army there, and they came by night and surrounded the city. 15 And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” 16 So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17 And Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 18 So when the Syrians came down to him, Elisha prayed to the Lord, and said, “Strike this people, I pray, with blindness.” And He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.
iii) 2 Kings 6:19–23 (NKJV) — 19 Now Elisha said to them, “This is not the way, nor is this the city. Follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek.” But he led them to Samaria. 20 So it was, when they had come to Samaria, that Elisha said, “Lord, open the eyes of these men, that they may see.” And the Lord opened their eyes, and they saw; and there they were, inside Samaria! 21 Now when the king of Israel saw them, he said to Elisha, “My father, shall I kill them? Shall I kill them?” 22 But he answered, “You shall not kill them. Would you kill those whom you have taken captive with your sword and your bow? Set food and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master.” 23 Then he prepared a great feast for them; and after they ate and drank, he sent them away and they went to their master. So the bands of Syrian raiders came no more into the land of Israel.
3) 2 Timothy 3:14–17 (NKJV) — 14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
4) A Living Fountain
a) The type of person we want to be and the world we want to create together.
b) The gifts of the Spirit in the body – the quality of life!
c) Judaism has relentlessly sought God in the here-and-now of life on earth. Yes, we believe in life after death, but it is in life before death that we truly find human greatness.[2]
