In our journey through life, we often find ourselves at crossroads, moments that challenge our faith and resilience. Recently, I had an experience that reminded me of the importance of being prepared for the winters of life, both practically and spiritually. This reflection comes from a visit to my liver doctor in Houston, where I was reminded of the vital role we all play in each other’s lives.

During my visit, I was struck by a conversation with my liver doctor and their team. They expressed a desire for spiritual support, asking me to pray for them and others in their team. It was a humbling moment, reminding me that regardless of our professions—be it a minister, a plumber, or a business owner—we all have a sphere of influence. Each of us is called to be a witness for Christ in our daily lives.

The word “witness” carries a profound meaning. It signifies that we have died to ourselves and risen anew in Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit to minister to those around us. I recall a survey conducted at a ministerial gathering where 97% of the attendees came to faith through personal relationships rather than large evangelistic events. This highlights the significance of friendship evangelism—the idea that genuine connections often lead to spiritual transformations.

The Need for Love

At the core of our existence are two fundamental needs: to love and to be loved. This is intricately woven into the fabric of our being. Jesus emphasized this in the greatest commandments: to love God with all our heart and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Many struggles, especially mental health issues, stem from a lack of love and connection. We are designed to be relational beings, and it’s crucial that we meet each other’s needs for love and support.

Preparing for Winter

As we delve into the message today, aptly titled “Before Winter Comes,” we turn to the scriptures for guidance. In 2 Timothy 4:11, Paul, in the twilight of his life, encourages Timothy to be prepared. He understands that winter is not just a season; it represents challenges and trials we will inevitably face. It is essential to prepare ourselves spiritually and practically for these times.

Paul’s request for his cloak and books underscores the importance of both physical and spiritual preparation. His cloak symbolizes practical needs, while his desire for books represents the continuous pursuit of knowledge and understanding. Paul, even after years of being taught by Christ, recognized that there is always more to learn. This attitude of humility is crucial for all of us.
