A Great Holiday: Celebrating Pentecost

When we think of holidays, certain celebrations come to mind immediately—Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and the Fourth of July. Each of these has its unique significance and traditions. But today, I want to focus on a holiday that often goes unnoticed outside the church: Pentecost. This day marks one of the greatest events in Christian history—the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

The Unchanging Truth

Before diving into Pentecost, let’s reflect on a fundamental concept: truth is unchanging. It’s true that God created the heavens and the earth, regardless of what anyone believes. It’s true that we are made in God’s image, with a purpose and an identity grounded in Christ. These truths stand firm, independent of personal beliefs.

Similarly, God’s activity in our world is constant. He is not a distant deity waiting for our prayers to intervene. He is actively involved in our lives, more invested in our salvation than we can comprehend. This understanding challenges the notion that God requires our pleas to act.

God’s Active Presence

Throughout history, God has demonstrated His active involvement in creative and sometimes humorous ways. Consider the stories from the Book of Judges, where God acted even when His people didn’t cry out. Or the time He took a tour with the Ark of the Covenant through the land of the Philistines, declaring His sovereignty.

These stories reveal a God who is industrious, creative, and present. He is a God worth worshiping and celebrating. Holidays, in essence, are about celebrating and remembering significant truths and events. Pentecost is one such holiday that deserves recognition.

Why Pentecost Matters

Pentecost, the day when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the early church, is a pivotal moment in Christian history. Yet, it’s not widely celebrated outside the church. Why is that? Perhaps it’s because Pentecost challenges us to recognize the authority of Jesus as King. The American Revolution’s slogan, “No King but King Jesus,” captures this sentiment.

Pentecost signifies a turning point, a moment when the light of the Gospel began to spread across the world. It’s a reminder that the Kingdom of God is at hand, bringing life and light to a world in darkness.

The Light in Samaria

To illustrate the impact of Pentecost, let’s look at the story of Philip in Samaria from the Book of Acts. Philip, carrying the light of the Gospel, entered a city steeped in darkness. As he preached the good news, signs and wonders followed. People witnessed the Kingdom of God in action and longed to be part of it.

Even Simon the sorcerer, who had previously practiced magic, believed and was baptized. This transformation exemplifies the power of the Holy Spirit and the reality of the Kingdom.

The Fire of the Holy Spirit

The Gospel is a fire that can ignite the world, but it requires the Holy Spirit’s power to spread. The Apostles recognized that the believers in Samaria needed this Holy Ghost fire to carry the light further. When they laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit filled them, and the fire spread.

Pentecost is not merely a historical event; it is a living reality that empowers believers to extend the rule and reign of King Jesus. It’s about being part of a movement, not just an organization.

A Kingdom of Fire and Light

Jesus instructed His disciples to wait for the promise of the Holy Spirit, the power that would enable them to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth. This power is not about organizational structure but about life and movement.

The church is called to be the epicenter of a spiritual explosion, spreading the light and love of God’s Kingdom. It’s a kingdom where every enemy is put under Christ’s feet, where His rule brings justice, peace, and freedom.

The Call to Be Part of the Movement

Being part of this movement requires a radical devotion to Jesus and a lifestyle filled with the Holy Spirit’s presence. It’s about living out the truth that Jesus is Lord, not just in words but in action.

As believers, we are invited to participate in what God is doing in the world. It’s a call to ignite others with the same Holy Ghost fire, to transform cultures, and to extend the borders of God’s Kingdom.

Conclusion: Celebrating Pentecost

Pentecost is a great holiday because it marks the beginning of the church’s mission to spread the Gospel to the world. It’s a celebration of the Holy Spirit’s power and presence in our lives.

As we reflect on Pentecost, let us be grateful for the Kingdom we have received, a Kingdom that cannot be shaken. Let us offer God worship with reverence and awe, and let us be the light that sets the world ablaze with His love and truth.
