The Sons and Daughters of Liberty

(Sermon Outline)

1)      Why did Jesus say he came to earth?

a)      Luke 12:49 (NKJV) — 49 “I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!

i)        What is the fire He wants kindled?

ii)      Do we have similar passion in our heart?

b)      John describes a reason Jesus came to earth: 1 John 3:8b (NKJV) — 8…For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

i)        If He came to destroy the works of the devil, how completely do you expect Him to succeed?

ii)      How to you envision God plans to accomplish it?

2)      We gain insight into why Jesus came from the story of His return to Nazareth after beginning his public ministry

a)      This is the first time in Luke where Jesus explained his mission:

b)      Luke 4:16–19 (NKJV) — 16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

c)      Do you believe that work is still continuing today?

d)      The Worldwide Liberation movement

3)      John the Baptist explained the purpose Jesus came to accomplish when explaining his ministry:

a)      Luke 3:16 (NKJV) — 16 John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

b)      There came into my soul a deep peace, a thrilling joy, and a new sense of power. My mind was quickened. I felt that I had received a new faculty of understanding. Every power was vitalized. My bodily powers were quickened. There was a new sense of spring and vitality, a new power of endurance, and a strong man’s exhilaration in big things. Things began to happen.[1]

c)      Revisiting things that kindle a fire in my heart!

i)        Leonard Ravenhill

ii)      The revival on the isle of Lewis by Duncan Campbell.

d)      Do we believe God can do this today?  Do we want to see it?

4)      Personal Transformation and the ministry of the church – the goal of the baptism of the spirit is to reproduce the character and ministry of Jesus in the church!

a)      Ephesians 4:(7)–8 (NKJV) —7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.”

b)      The purpose:  Raising up the sons and daughters of Liberty!

c)      2 Corinthians 3:17–18 (NKJV) — 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
